This has been a long time in the making, and we promise it wasn't due to a lack of effort. A couple of things have changed since the last functional iteration of CAN FD, so we will do our best to break that down for you here.

• CAN FD functionality will now require an active annual subscription. Effective immediately, AutoProPAD “G2” and “Legacy” annual subscription prices have been drastically reduced through March 3^rd, 2024. Please visit your preferred AutoProPAD distributor for more information.

• Each CAN FD transaction will require a programming “Credit.” This decision wasn't made lightly but was deemed necessary because of the new costs involved in reestablishing and maintaining the CAN FD service. Credits are currently priced at $39.99 each (compared to almost $50 after tax from GM) but can be acquired for much less when purchased in bulk.
  
  
• The CAN FD protocol still requires either a) an AutoProPAD with integrated CAN FD capabilities or b) an external XTool CAN FD Adapter [XTL-CAN-FD].
  
  It's easy to check if your AutoProPAD has integrated CAN FD functionality!
  • AutoProPAD G2—Serial numbers AG2-00771 and higher have integrated CAN FD.
  • AutoProPAD G2 Turbo—Serial numbers AG2T-01271 and higher have integrated CAN FD.
  • All G2 and G2 Turbo units that fall below these thresholds will require the XTool CAN FD Adapter [XTL-CAN-FD].
  • No legacy units (BASIC, FULL, LITE, PS80, PS90) have integrated CAN FD and will all require the XTool CAN FD Adapter [XTL-CAN-FD].

CAN FD Key Programming Tips

Step 1—Identify the Vehicle

Refer to the infographic in this product listing or consult supportedvehicles.com for the latest, most detailed information on all CAN FD vehicles. If the vehicle you are programming is not listed on our chart, please consult the website or call AutoProPAD technical support for guidance. Hi Chad!

Step 2—Determine if you need the XTool CAN FD Adapter

The XTool CAN FD Adapter is required for most AutoProPAD machines. Some newer units have CAN FD capability integrated. An integrated unit WILL NOT WORK with the CAN FD Adapter as it is not required. Check your serial number to determine if your unit has integrated CAN FD capabilities (see above).

You will need the XTool CAN FD Adapter to communicate with the vehicle if your AutoProPAD does not have the feature integrated. Visit your preferred AutoProPAD distributor for pricing.

Step 3—Obtain a CAN FD Credit

Before initiating the key programming process, visit AutoKeyPros.com to purchase a CAN FD Credit. Upon purchase, a unique code will be sent to you by email almost immediately. This code must be manually entered on your machine when prompted during the programming process.

Tip: Bulk discounts are triggered at quantities of 5 and 10.

NOTICE: You must enter your machine(s) serial number(s) when prompted during site registration or checkout. Failure to do so will result in the cancellation of your order.

Step 4—Program the key with your AutoProPAD

Ensure your AutoProPAD has a stable internet connection before initiating the programming process. 

Once all the necessary preparations are complete, connect your AutoProPAD to the vehicle. Proceed to the immobilization page and open the US GM Software. From there, choose the immobilizer option and then select your vehicle. Once you have chosen your vehicle, select "Free Pin." If you wish to program an additional key, select "Add a Key."

If you need to delete all existing keys, choose "All Keys Lost." If you have a working key, press and hold the start button to switch the ignition on. If you don't have a working key, follow the machine's instructions to force the ignition on. Once the AutoProPAD establishes a connection with the vehicle, it will prompt you to enter your 16-digit CAN FD Credit. After inputting the information, simply follow the prompts on the tool to program a new key.

WARNING: KEEP YOUR CLUSTER/BCM AWAKE!

The best advice we can offer is to open and shut the driver’s side door every ten minutes. Set a timer so you don’t forget. We’ve achieved the highest programming success rates by following this simple advice. DO NOT allow the vehicle voltage to drop below 12.5 Volts! This will also put the vehicle to sleep as a battery preservation measure.

Does my vehicle require a 2-hour wait?

Premium SUVs manufactured on or after March of 2023 will almost always have a mandatory 2-hour programming lockout instead of the standard 10-minute wait. These vehicles must have a battery maintainer in place. If the vehicle voltage drops below 12.5V, the BCM (Body Control Module) will enter a sleep state, and the programming process will be aborted. For all vehicles: please make sure that the ignition is turned to the "on" position (indicated by a green start button) and not in the accessory position (indicated by an orange start button). This is necessary to prevent the vehicle from entering sleep mode.

Is an active annual subscription necessary to access CAN FD key programming on the AutoProPAD?

The machine will need an active annual subscription to access the online servers and to receive all necessary updates.

Do I need to update my AutoProPAD for CAN FD to work?

It is strongly advised that the latest updates are installed on any AutoProPAD used for CAN FD key programming. Many revisions have been made to the software, and older versions may cause damage to the vehicle.

Do I need to update my CAN FD Adapter?

The AutoProPAD will automatically update your CAN FD adapter upon commencement of key programming. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the process and ensure you have a strong internet signal.
